Shfl Update, June 30
Rick Anderson on Bill Frisell plus new recommendations from Philip Freeman, Nate Patrin, Beatriz Miranda, Alex Riggs, Sean Wood, Ned Raggett and Jeff Treppel
Reviews
Philip Freeman on Cactus, Kansas, Blue Öyster Cult, ZZ Top, James Gang and Styx
Andrew Bird, Arcade Fire, Lambchop, Japanese Breakfast, Owen Pallett, G.L.O.S.S., Craig Finn and The Flaming Lips from Alex Riggs
Beatriz Miranda with one each from Sérgio Sampaio and Clara Nunes. The Nunes album isn’t on streaming as far as I can tell (at least in the US) but you can listen to the title track, ‘Canto das Três Raças,’ on YouTube
Heifetz in Brahms, James Primosch’s Carthage, Gould’s 1955 Goldberg Variations, and a gorgeous album by Anonymous 4 from Sean Wood
Nate Patrin on Traffic, War, O.V. Wright, Miles Davis, Alice Coltrane, Black Sabbath, John Cale and James Brown
Some mostly recent-ish ambient recommendations, including Chihei Hatakeyama, Massive Attack, zakè, Portishead, Hotel Neon, Eraldo Bernocchi, marine eyes, Asuna and Celer from Ned Raggett
Jeff Treppel with Xavion, Bewitcher, Fishbone, Hirax, Zeal & Ardor, Last Exit and Animals As Leaders
Guides
Rick Anderson on guitarist Bill Frisell, whose Have a Little Faith is a personal favorite. More guitarists should play Charles Ives
Miscellany
Added a couple of new lists, from Julian Cope’s Krautrocksampler and Japrocksampler. Jeff Treppel recommended Satori a while back and if you liked that there will be a lot on the japrock list that you will like — and if krautrock is more your speed stay tuned. I am not sure that I had ever listened to a full album from Cope’s The Teardrop Explodes either…they were a really good band!
