Shfl Update, July 14
Guides to 70's live classic rock and the label Camera Obscura plus new recommendations from Zev Kane, Nate Patrin, Beatriz Miranda, Jeff Treppel, Phil Freeman and Alex Riggs
Recommendations
Zev Kane with Earl Wild playing Copland and Menotti and a fantastic recording with an equally fantastic story behind it, Atterberg’s Dollar Symphony
Nate Patrin with some late-60’s classix, if you’ve never heard it you owe it to yourself to check out The United States of America
Beatriz Miranda on the contemporary funk carioca album Carne de Pescoço
Bruce Dickinson, Cattle Decapitation, Cathedral, Budgie, Muse, Craft and Yngwie Malmsteen from Jeff Treppel
Philip Freeman on KRS-One, Just-Ice, M.O.P., Ice-T, Prodigy, Onyx, Boogie Down Productions and King Tee
Ben Folds, Wolf Parade, Cardiacs and John Zorn from Alex Riggs
Guides
Ned Raggett on the psychedelically adventurous label Camera Obscura
Jeff Treppel on 70’s live classic rock albums. I’ve owned At Fillmore East on every format there is but I probably play Unleashed in the East more, and this Scorpions album is no slouch either
Features
You probably already know that recommenders have their own pages that collate all of the recommendations I have from them — there’s a couple of things about these pages that I think are useful that might not be immediately obvious:
If you’re signed in you can save favorite recommenders to your account, there’s a little ‘Save’ button on the upper left there
on the upper right there’s a dropdown, you can filter a big list by category or by genre (or even by whether albums are on Bandcamp or not). This can be useful if you just want to see, say, Phil Freeman’s metal recommendations or Ned Raggett’s ambient recommendations.
If you do filter a list, the little ‘Shfl’ button on the upper right will remember, so if you click it you can just flip through the subset you had selected.
